Chip & seal paving is known by other names such as tar & chip paving and chip sealing.
It is similar to asphalt paving but has some distinct differences. The “chip” of chip & seal is small gravel, and the “seal” is hot liquid asphalt cement also known as hot tar.
Chip & seal paving has been used over 100 years to pave roads, parking lots, driveways, and just about any area that needs a paved surface. It is widely used on roads throughout North Texas. If you have every driven on a road built and maintained by a county government, you have driven on chip & seal paving.
